Thousands of Queenians, Komani locals and schools cricket lovers will be following the Queen's College–Dale College rain SA20 Derby Series match at Parry Davies Field on 9 October. Among them will be an honorary Queenian: Mangaliso Mosehle.

For three years, Mosehle served as Queen's cricket professional. He came to the role in mid-2023 after a 15-year professional career that included seven T20 internationals for the Proteas. At Queen's he oversaw the 1st XI and gave specialist coaching at both the high and junior schools.

His success there, along with part-time work in the Border set-up, earned him a full-time role as fielding coach at the Dolphins in July.

Having seen the derby between these two historic schools up close, 'Mangi' is eagerly awaiting the latest instalment, in the rain SA20 Derby Series.

"I remember when I first arrived at Queen's in 2023, I learnt about the history between the two schools, who have been playing each other for more than 100 years. There's rich history in the Eastern Cape from a cricketing point of view. It's always an exciting time when you play against Dale, and I'm really looking forward to this one in the SA20 Derby Series," Mosehle told SA20 Media after concluding a fielding drill in his new role.

Mosehle's former charges have had the better of the match-up in recent years, winning four of the last five fixtures across 50-over and declaration clashes. Even so, he knows Queen's won't be resting on their laurels.

"It will be a tough game, but the boys have shown a lot of character and a lot of grit in recent years, and they play well together as a team. I really enjoyed working with them," Mosehle says.

"The Derby Series is such a great initiative. It's always good to give the kids exposure… I know they are going to be hyped up, but my message to them, like always, would be to do the things that don't require talent and fight to the end."

As he settles into his new role at the Dolphins and reflects on his time in the heart of the Eastern Cape, Mosehle is nothing but thankful.

"Thank you to everyone at Queen's who has played a massive role in my coaching career and development. I'm grateful for the support I received from Mr [Janse] van der Ryst and Mr [Colin] Hartley [the high and junior school headmasters respectively], with a special mention for the 'old statesman', Mr [Ralph] Cullinan.

"[Cullinan] kept me grounded. He is a very special man who has played a massive role not only in my cricketing career but in my life in general… I love him to bits," Mosehle concludes.
