New names, real ambition: Cornwall Hill and Midstream open a fresh derby chapter
The rain SA20 Derby Series is built on two kinds of fixture: derbies steeped in history, and newer match-ups that show where schools cricket is heading. Cornwall Hill College against Midstream College, the fourth match of the series on 21 October 2026, belongs firmly to the second group.
Neither school haslong history to lean on. Cornwall Hill - who'll host this day-night derby at their Van der Byl Oval (one of four floodlit cricket fields at the school) - opened in 1998, and Midstream's high school followed in 2007, its first matrics writing their final exams in 2009. Yet both have already made themselves hard to ignore in the Titans region.

Cornwall Hill, known as CHC, was the first side into the Titans semifinals in Volume 1 (with Midstream being one of their scalps along the way) while in Volume 2 they were back in the last four, going down to eventual Titans champions Affies.
Their alumni list is already notable for a school of its age, too. Aiden Markram, South Africa's T20 captain, began his schooling at Cornwall Hill before finishing at Pretoria Boys’ High School. Lhuan-dre Pretorius, meanwhile, completed his schooling there and signed both his first Titans and Paarl Royals deals in his matric year. Lethabo Phahlamohlaka, the Titans-contracted wicketkeeper-batter who captained the school and played at the 2026 Under-19 World Cup, is the latest to follow them out of Irene.
DID YOU KNOW? The Van der Byl Oval is named after the family who donated a portion of their land to establish Cornwall Hill.
Midstream, some 10km down the road in the south of Centurion, has yet to produce a high-profile alumnus, but the foundations are being laid. Their Volume 2 run also ended in the Titans semifinals, where Garsfontein got the better of them. The campus offers five cricket pitches, including the showpiece Midfield Oval where the 1st XI play, as well as a well-equipped gymnasium - facilities that rank among the best in the Titans region. The school competes in the Finsbury and Titans B-leagues and took its cricketers on a tour of England in June 2025, starting at Dulwich College. Further evidence of Midstream’s progress is that star bowler Jonathan Wiseman made school history in August 2026 by becoming the first-ever player to earn 100 caps for the first team.
While neither side has yet to make it through to Phase 2 of rain Schools SA20, each has come close. That gives this derby its edge. For Cornwall Hill it is a chance to show that their recent record is the start of something lasting. For Midstream it is a chance to show why their trajectory points upwards, and to make the first mark as their match-up with their near-neighbours builds momentum.
Two young schools, one new derby, and plenty to prove.
