Honours even, history deep: Michaelhouse host Hilton in the Midlands edition of rain SA20 Derby Series

5 Nov 20264 mins

Set against the rolling hills of the KwaZulu-Natal mist belt, the Midlands Derby between Michaelhouse and Hilton College is one of South Africa’s most cherished and picturesque schoolboy sporting contests – and their rain SA20 Derby Series encounter is set to add another chapter.

When Michaelhouse host Hilton at the Roy Gathorne Oval on 6 November (14:00), the fixture will carry roots stretching back to the late 19th century. Both schools were founded in the 1800s – Hilton in 1872 and Michaelhouse in 1896 – and their first recorded cricket encounter took place on 26 November 1904. In the 120-plus years since, the derby has grown from a simple local match into a grand weekend spectacle that brings the KZN Midlands to a standstill, drawing thousands of pupils, parents and alumni to the boundary ropes.

WATCH: Michaelhouse vs Hilton live on DStv Channel 216, the Schools SA20 YouTube Channel and SuperSport Schools App on Friday, 6 November from 14:00.

Breeding ground for internationals

The standard of cricket in the Midlands Derby is perennially elite, and for decades it has been a stepping stone to first-class and international cricket. Both schools have produced legends who have worn the green and gold for South Africa – and beyond.

Michaelhouse’s cricketing alumni include legendary post-war South Africa captain Alan Melville, as well as Ossie Dawson, Tufty Mann, Christopher Burger, Kim Elgie, Kelly Seymour, Derek Varnals and Dale Benkenstein. ‘Benks’, a prolific middle-order batter of the 1990s/early 2000s, has since coached around the world, including as Director of Cricket at Hilton and Pretoria Capitals assistant coach in SA20.

Hilton’s honours board includes the great allrounder Mike Procter, modern-day Proteas Lungi Ngidi and Eathan Bosch, and other notable internationals including Johnny Waite, Roy McLean and England’s Tom Curran.

The spirit of the derby

Whether Hilton’s 1st XI is stepping out at Michaelhouse’s Roy Gathorne Oval or Michaelhouse are making the trip to Hilton’s majestic Hart-Davis Oval, the atmosphere between these storied rivals is electric. Recent results add more intrigue to this rain SA20 Derby Series clash.

The sides have met five times in the winner-takes-all rain Schools SA20. Friday’s hosts Michaelhouse have won two, Hilton have won two, and last month’s group-stage meeting was washed out. Honours appear even, but both of Hilton’s wins came in semifinals, in Volume 1 and Volume 2. Each time they knocked ‘House out and booked their own place in the regional Phase 2 as finalists. Hilton won the KwaZulu-Natal Inland final in Volume 1. In Volume 2 they lost the provincial final but still went on to claim the regional title and play in the National Finals in Pretoria earlier this year.

Michaelhouse–Hilton matches are defined by competitiveness on the field, balanced by the camaraderie of two student bodies who share the same boarding-school realities. When the final wicket falls or the winning runs are scored, expect the true gees of the Midlands Derby to live on.
