DID YOU KNOW? THE REMARKABLE 'DOUBLE-SA20' RISE OF THOMAS REW
While local stars like JJ Basson and Bayanda Majola have taken the traditional route from Schools SA20 to a SA20 side via the Player Auction, English sensation Thomas Rew has carved out a path that is truly unique.
The 18-year-old wicketkeeper-batter is the first international 'graduate' from the schoolboy tournament to the professional SA20 league.
The St Stithians 'Secret Weapon'
In late 2024, Rew arrived at St Stithians Boys' College in Johannesburg on a cricket exchange from King’s College Taunton - the same prestigious English school that produced superstar Jos Buttler (returning to SA20 in Season 4 with Durban's Super Giants) as well as Tom Banton (MI Cape Town, Season 2) and Will Smeed (Pretoria Capitals, Seasons 3-4).
Though he was only a guest at Saints under Lazarus Mokoena, Rew made an immediate impact during Phase 1 of Schools SA20 Volume 1. He started the competition with a thumping 69 off 33 deliveries (2x4, 8x6) against Trinityhouse Randpark Ridge, before another blistering innings against St John's College in the quarterfinal which showed his professional potential. Walking to the crease at number three, Rew smashed 81 off only 42 deliveries (8x4, 4x6) to take his adopted team home alongside Ombesa Matsha.

A Whirlwind 2025: Captaincy and Royals Call-up
Fast forward just over a year, and Rew's career has shifted into overdrive. By the end of 2025, he wasn't just a promising youngster; he was the England U19 captain on the brink of leading his nation into the 2026 ICC Under-19 World Cup in Zimbabwe and Namibia.
However, before he joined his 'Young Lions' teammates for their World Cup campaign (where he would eventually lead them to the final and score a heroic semi-final century against Australia), he received a surprise return ticket to South Africa. Paarl Royals signed Rew as a temporary replacement player for the 2026 SA20 season, making him a rare 'graduate' who experienced the magic of Schools SA20 before being called up to the big stage. Ironically, Basson, who was also signed by Royals, would have to wait until the World Cup to meet up as the Junior Proteas went into camp before England.

Why It’s So Unusual
Unlike Basson or Majola, who represent the pinnacle of South African developmental structures, Rew’s story highlights the global reach of the SA20 brand.
- 2024: Exchange student at St Stithians; Schools SA20 star.
- 2025: Set the record for the fastest-ever England U19 century (73 balls).
- 2026: SA20 professional with Paarl Royals and England U19 World Cup captain.
From clearing the ropes at Dlamini Oval to rubbing shoulders with David Miller and Lhuan-dre Pretorius (an Old Stithian himself) in the Royals dugout, Thomas Rew has proven that the road to the SA20 can start in the most unexpected places.

Thomas Rew and fellow Old Stithian, Lhuan-dre Pretorius, could compare notes of their time playing on Dlamini Oval during Season 4.
