WANCKEL THE STAR AS STIRLING CLAIM GOLD IN BORDER GIRLS DIVISION

2 Nov 20242 mins

Stirling High School are the winners of the Border girls division of Schools SA20 Phase 1.

The East Londoners made full use of home ground advantage by beating Middledrift Hub by 8 wickets to secure their place in Phase 2 of the competition, where they will face the winners from Eastern Province and Kei.

In the Final, played in blustery conditions at Stirling's Galway Road field, Middledrift batted first but struggled to string partnerships together to set the hosts a meaningful total. All told, the girls from iXesi managed only 46 before being bowled out after 12.5 overs - with no batter scoring more than 5. For Stirling, Cayleigh Wanckel (selected for the provincial U19 team the day before) was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with 3/4 from 3 overs. Addyson Stanton ably backed Wanckel up, claiming 3/25 from 3 overs too.

During their turn to bat, Stirling made short work of chasing down the target. Coming in at no. 3, Wanckel set the pace with a 14-ball 21 before she departed allowing N Hart and Lisa Vosloo to see Stirling home.
