SYMBOLIC SCHOOLS SA20 TROPHIES REVEALED

With the teams for the Schools SA20 National Finals now known, following the conclusion of Phase 2 across six regions, the trophies that the 14 teams – boys and girls – will be competing for have been revealed.

During the innings break of SA20’s Qualifier 1, between MI Cape Town and Paarl Royals, at St George’s Park on Tuesday evening the two trophies were revealed. The artist who brought them to life, Gqeberha-based sculptor Sarah Walmsley explained how they were made.

“The creative process was quite a hybrid - a fusion of old and new. We took cutting-edge technology such as digital rendering and 3-D printing and combined that with traditional sculpting methods such as moulding and casting to create the trophies.”

Asked about the actual look and feel and design of the trophies, Walmsley revealed the symbolism.

“The colours we have chosen reflect SA20 [the main competition], but more importantly we’ve got symbolism. The green represents grassroots growth and enrichment. The blue represents the sky… and as we know with Schools SA20, the sky is the limit. The yellow represents the sun, which nurtures the young players just as this tournament does… that they will one day be playing [in the senior SA20 competition].

With the teams known, the trophies unveiled, all attention will now focus on University of Pretoria come 12-15 March when the best of the best schools teams will compete for the honour of being inaugural Schools SA20 champions.
