NORTHWOOD GET BETTER OF GLENWOOD TO BE CROWNED KZN COASTAL KINGS

17 Nov 20243 mins

Northwood School have won the KwaZulu-Natal Coastal leg of Schools SA20 Phase 1, courtesy of an emphatic 8-wicket victory over Glenwood High School in the Final in Ballito.

The Final brought an end to a busy two days of action on the coast. Northwood claimed their place in it on Friday afternoon with a 6-wicket victory in a home semifinal - at their R Smith Oval - over Clifton School. Glenwood, meanwhile, didn't have the benefit of a night's rest as they first had to overcome Westville Boys' High School (by only 10 runs) earlier on Saturday, at Kingsmead Oval across the road from the main stadium, before travelling up to Ashton International College Ballito for the floodlit finale.

In the Final itself, Glenwood won the toss and opted to bat first. They made a brisk enough start, reaching 54/1 in the Powerplay, Northwood's Thabiso Mtambo produced an innings - and match-defining - spell with the ball. In the space of two overs, four wickets fell for just 15 runs, pegging Glenwood back to 69/5.

If Glenwood thought there'd be respite after Mtambo, Ben Cilliers then also delivered and outstanding spell of 3/6 from his four overs to Glenwood's innings in tatters. They were eventually bowled out for just 95 with one ball left of their allotted 20 overs.

Northwood's openers, David de Bruyn and Tuswa Phetha, summed up the chase well by adopting a composed approach before lightning brought a brief halt to proceedings. On the players' return to the field, Glenwood did manage to make inroads, dismissing de Bruyn and Thomas Oosthuizen in quick succession, leaving the Knights at 24/2.

Unperturbed, Alistair Duncan (39* from 38 balls) and Tuswa Phetha (35* from 42 balls) combined picking off bad balls and good running between the wickets with their 72-run partnership steering Northwood home - with 14 balls remaining.

While Northwood took the honours, Glenwood will join them in Phase 2 in January where they'll compete with their KwaZulu-Natal Inland rivals - Hilton College and Maritzburg College - for the region's single place in the National Finals, scheduled for March 2025.
