Can Pearson girls reclaim Eastern Province title Woodridge took from them?

Schools SA20's Eastern Province girls competition is back for Volume 3, with eight teams locked into a single round-robin league running from 27 August through to 13 October, before the top sides advance to semifinals and a final still to be confirmed.

While all of New Brighton Hub, Pearson High School, Collegiate Girls' High School, Victoria Park High School, Hoërskool Framesby, Woodridge College, Westering High School and Alexander Road High School eye glory, only two have lifted the provincial title so far, and their rivalry is the obvious thread running through Volume 3.

Pearson won Volume 1 - a season in which their boys' side also claimed provincial honours - and looked set to defend it when they reached the Volume 2 final. Instead, it was Woodridge who denied them, recording a first-ever win over Pearson to claim the title and announce themselves as the province's new benchmark. For a Woodridge girls' programme that has been building steadily - taking on tours, hosting festivals, and now backing it up with silverware - it was the statement result the school had been working towards.

Pearson, for their part, are not standing still. The school opened an indoor Cricket Centre of Excellence a year ago, and the investment is already paying dividends: Pearson have produced a stream of provincial U19 players, with Cayleigh Wanckel going on to earn national recognition. A Volume 2 final appearance, even in defeat, suggests the pieces are in place for another tilt at the title - and a chance to settle the score with Woodridge along the way.

In fact, the two teams' round-robin meeting on Thursday, 17 September - at Woodridge - should give an early indication of the lay of the land in Eastern Province.

They will not have it easy. Framesby were Volume 1's runners-up and remain firmly in the mix, while Alexander Road, Collegiate, Victoria Park, Westering and New Brighton Hub all have the fixtures to make life difficult for the two form teams over the coming seven weeks of T20 cricket.

With a full round-robin to navigate before the knockout stages even begin, Volume 3 promises a proper examination of depth across Eastern Province's girls' schools cricket - and the chance for either Pearson or Woodridge to open a real lead in what is fast becoming the province's defining rivalry.
