VICTORIA GIRLS WIN WESTERN PROVINCE'S 'BATTLE OF THE HUBS'
Victoria Hub will represent Western Province in Phase 2 of Schools SA20 after winning the 'Battle of the Hubs' in the Final played at Vineyard Oval in Newlands.
The girls from Chukker Road were too strong for Gugulethu, claiming a 7-wicket victory.
Gugulethu went out to bat first, but were met by a stingy Victoria bowling line-up. Boundaries were hard to come by and wickets fell at regular intervals when big shots were attempted. Sakeenah Williams (3/8) and Fatima Dollie (2/3) did the initial damage before Ashline Titus came on at first change and ripped through the Gugulethu batting line-up to claim 4/6 from her four overs.
All told, Gugulethu only managed 38 all out after 14.5 overs, with extras (14) being their top scorer.
Victoria might have had a few jitters when openers Thaurah Dollie (0 off four balls), Nuhaa Benjamin (9 off 19) and Imaan van Schalkwyk (4 off 9) were dismissed during the Powerplay, but that was the sum total of the damage Gugulethu could mete - especially after Amahle Gladile (2/7) and Lisekho Diniso (1/13) completed their spells.
Instead, Williams (11 not out) and Shabiera Petersen (9 not out) saw Victoria through to the 7-wicket victory after 10.3 overs.
