POTCH DERBY KICKSTARTS SCHOOLS SA20 LIVE COVERAGE

As much as 250 Schools SA20 matches will be broadcast live, via the SuperSport Schools App, during Season 1 and that coverage begins on Tuesday, 3 September with a Potch Derby.

Just a day after the launch of Schools SA20, the boys teams of Potchefstroom Gimnasium and Volkskool Potchefstroom will battle for a place in the next round of the North West section of the competition. ‘Gimmies’ will have the home ground advantage for the match kicking off at 14:30.

Both teams have pedigree having won through to the National Finals in Schools SA20’s predecessor, the CSA T20 Schools Challenge. Gimmies were first to do so in 2012, while Volkies matched them in 2015. Both had to do things the hard way as the competition ran on franchise lines previously so North West’s winner had to defeat the Central Gauteng Lions winner to reach the national finals.

In recent times, Gimmies have had their name in lights courtesy of the exploits in Proteas colours and for Sunrisers Eastern Cape in SA20 of old boy Marco Jansen.

Similarly, Jansen’s twin brother, Duan (North West Dragons and MI Cape Town) and Caleb Seleka (North West Dragons and Sunrisers Eastern Cape) have also brought credit and pride to those with an attachment to Gimmies.

Derbies, though, bring out the best in players, and the nature of T20 matches is that it only takes one or two individual performances to decide a match. Both also have a game in the competition under their belt, with Gimmies having overcome Klerksdorp High School by 8 wickets (134 all out plays 135/2) and Volkies having thumped by Hoërskool Wesvalia - also from Klerksdorp - by 10 wickets (73 all out plays 78/0).

So, who can predict the winner today between hosts Gimmies or their near neighbours, Volkies?
